THE West Australian football community is in mourning with WA Amateur Football League and WAFL stalwart George Meiers sadly passing away last week. Meiers was a long time servant of the game as a player, coach and umpire, beginning his WAAFL career in 1937 for North Fremantle and captaining them throughout their undefeated premiership season in 1939 before joining East Fremantle in the WAFL in 1940. After joining the WAFL Meiers continued to impress; he won East Fremantle's best and fairest in 1940, captained the side, played in the 1945 premiership and also earned selection in the WAFL state team.
