West Coast Cowan Appoints New Coach for 2011

West Coast Cowan AFC is pleased to announce the appointment of Tristen Walker as the new head coach of the West Coast Cowan Amateur Football Club.

Tristen Walker brings a wealth of experience from his involvement in the football world; from his time as a player under Mick Malthouse at the Collingwood Football Club, to his previous involvement as an assistant coach at West Coast Cowan in 2008. Following this internship at the club, Walker has spent the previous 2 years involved in implementing sporting and AFL programs with the indigenous community in the North of Australia. Due to a change in working circumstances, Walker is now in a position to commit to this role at the West Coast Cowan Amateur Football Club for 2011.

Tristen takes over from Larry Kickett who has been a terrific member of the club since his appointment in 2009. His knowledge and presence has been the catalyst of many improvements within the club during his time in charge. Larry will continue to play a role in the coaching and administration of the club in 2011, with his experience in football and life sure to assist the endeavours of the club in achieving success next year and into the future..

“We’ve hired the best football coach we could,” said Isaak Dury, West Coast Cowan AFC President. “He has very recent experience at the highest level, but also understands the pressures that amateur football clubs have. He understands the complete club philosophy that we are building at West Coast Cowan. His ability to communicate and his level of enthusiasm is tremendously positive. He’s a perfect fit for what we’re trying to accomplish here.”

Tristen is a local boy, having attended Newman College. He developed his football skills at Claremont FC before being drafted by Collingwood in late 2001. In 2003 he played in the Williamstown premiership in the VFL before playing in the AFL grand final a week later. He finished with Collingwood in 2006, and has since been living in Perth.

Walker has for the past few years been working closely with ingenious people in the north of the state organising local sporting competitions and festivals. He has a real passion for helping people to develop which will be most helpful in this coaching role at West Coast Cowan.

“Tristen can help our players get to the next level. Because he’s been there, he has a deep appreciation for the balances that are required for young men, and the development that needs to take place. We’re fortunate to have secured a coach that brings the total package.” said Isaak Dury.

Many of the current playing list have already met their new coach, having grown up with him, and are enthusiastic about starting the preseason in late November. In addition, Walker will be recruiting over the summer to prepare for the 2011 season. He will be looking for football players who are “good citizens, leaders, and good team players. We will be selective in our recruiting process, but all inclusive in the development of all players at all levels” he said, in describing his teaching and coaching philosophy. “Being successful is the end product achieved by doing the right things on a daily basis. There are no short cuts.”
