University Claim Ultimate Prize

UNIVERSITY are the 2011 WA Amateur Football League A Grade Premiers, defeating Mt Lawley by 36 points at Medibank Stadium today.
Rarely challenged for the majority of the game, University hit the front at the twenty third minute mark of the first quarter and never looked back, running out 10.17 (76) to 5.10 (40) winners.
University were plagued by inaccuracy early, kicking two goals eleven before small forward David Crudeli crumbed goals in three minutes to give them a handy 22-point buffer.
Minor Premiers Mt Lawley, led by Captain-Coach and Sandover Medallist Shane Beros fought back late in the term, but they too were inaccurate in front of goals, going into the main break down by 24 points.
A strong grab in front of a vocal crowd by Sebastian Ruiz seemed to inspire Mt Lawley early in the third quarter but a goal on the siren to University’s Harrison Garland again put the lead out to four goals going into the last change.
Both sides struggled to get the crucial first goal in the final term, the eventual breakthrough coming to Nathan Hogg, putting University up by 31 at the nine-minute mark. Two more goals to Crudeli and it was game over for Mt Lawley, a late consolation goal to Clinton Gribble’s the only one of the quarter for the minor premiers.
David Crudeli was awarded the medal as best on ground for his five goal haul, while Matthew Breen and Shane Fleay also played well for University. Dean Cahill and Captain Shane Beros tried hard for the losers.
The flag, University’s 16th A Grade Premiership, is the first time since 2003 a team other than North Beach has won the major prize, and the clubs first since 1996.
