Tight at the Top in C2

ROUND 12 of the WA Amateur Football League C2 competition continues this weekend, with the race for finals now well and truly underway.

With only seven rounds remaining the battle for four points has never been more intense as seven teams battle it out for only five spots.

Canning VPSP sit top of the ladder on 36 points, just two points ahead of second placed Lynwood Ferndale and four in front of third placed Gosnells.

Bassendean, who drew with Lynwood Ferndale last weekend, sit two points below Gosnells with Kenwick a further two points behind them and Quinns District and Swan Valley chomping at the heels in sixth and seventh spot respectively.

The gap between fifth and sixth could be shortened this weekend however, with Canning VPSP hosting Kenwick at Wyong Reserve and Quinns District hosting Lynwood Ferndale at Ridgewood Park.

If Quinns District managed to defeat Lynwood Ferndale they would jump to within one games reach of fifth spot and a subsequent finals berth.

A victory for the boys from Ridgewood Park is not out of the question either, having pushed Lynwood to 23-points in their round 3 encounter at Ridgewood Park and holding an impressive victory over over finals contender Bassendean in Round 4.

Even with a victory, Quinns District would still need other results to fall their way, including a Kenwick loss in their match against ladder leaders Canning VPSP.

Canning VPSP will go into the match as favourites, but Kenwick will be confident at their best they will be able to cause an upset, having gotten within 19 points in their round 3 match and defeating second placed Lynwood Ferndale in round 4.

At the other end of the ladder the battle to avoid relegation is reaching climax, with three sides fighting to avoid the bottom two spots.

Manning, Cockburn Lakes and Belmont Districts currently sit in eighth, ninth and tenth spots respectively, with the bottom two only having recorded one solitary win for the year.

Belmont Districts travel out to Gosnells this weekend looking to steal a vital four points against a top side that could keep them in C2 next season. If they win, it would be the Bombers first victory since their round one match against Swan Valley.

A win becomes even more vital considering the Belmont meets Cockburn Lakes next weekend, and could potentially be eight points ahead of Cockburn Lakes and looking towards safety in the back part of the year.

Second bottom Cockburn Lakes will also be looking for their second victory against a top side, hosting Bassendean at Anning Park, while eighth placed Manning will be looking to record their fourth win of the season against Swan Valley.

Despite their lowly ladder position, Manning are a potential thorn in the side of many of the finals contenders having pushed a number of top clubs to the end before eventually falling short.

Bounce down for all matches is at 2:30pm, following Colts at 10:45am and Reserves at 12:35pm.
