Results split in annual showdown

THE WA Country Football League and WA Amateur Football League split their results at Fremantle Oval last Friday night, with the Amateurs taking out the colts’ honours and the WACFL winning the senior clash.

The annual city versus country challenge took place at Fremantle Oval as representative sides prepared for the upcoming national championships. The colts game was a very exciting and skilful encounter that saw the Amateurs win by four points after a goal in the dying minutes.

The country boys hit the lead for the first time late in the last quarter only to see the Amateurs kick a goal in the last few seconds to snatch victory. Ben Saunders from Mt Barker was outstanding along with midfielders Todd McNeill (Dalwallinu) and Ryan Davis (Katanning). Glen Smith (Northam) played a solid game at fullback.

In the senior contest, the country boys started slowly against the Amateur Under 23s but dominated after half time to win the game by 28 points. Lucas Fielding (Northam), John D’Sylva (Beacon) and Peter Farrant (Williams) kicked three goals each in a dominant forward line performance.

The highlight of the game was the ruckwork of Noonkanbah Blues big man Zaph Skinner, who was the best on ground in his first senior State game. Jon Price (Williams) led from the front on his return from Queensland and the two DeBlecourt brothers, Glen and Nathan from Northam, were very prominent and tough at the football.

The Amatuers were led by two goals each to Jamie Birrell (Trinity Aquinas) and Guy Boudville (West Coast Cowan), while Tyrone Miller (Collegians), Damon Bull (Willetton) and Kempton Sing (North Fremantle) were best players.
