Pink Tigers Raise Money for Breast Cancer

THE Wesley Curtin Amateur Football Club is about to do what many teams and football traditionalists would consider unthinkable – wear a pink jumper.

Long considered a macho sport, the Wesley Curtin Amateur Football Club will show a different side to football next Saturday, April 28 when they run out for their match against Scarborough wearing pink jumpers.

Starting last season, “Pink Tiger Day” is a ladies only event that sees the Wesley Curtin league team don a pink jumper as part of a fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation.

The event attracts between 100 – 150 women who are provided food, drinks and entertainment, including being served drinks by some of the Wesley Curtin players.

Wesley Curtin Fundraising Co-ordinator Mark Hayter, who spearheaded the event, said that although raising $17,500 last year was a great achievement, this years’ target is even greater.

“Last year was great but this year our target is $25,000” He said

“We felt if we’re going to do this we would do it right and set a significant target”

Mr Hayter said that all funds go to the McGrath Foundation, who fund breast cancer research and provide nursing support for breast cancer sufferers.

“We have 11 sponsors who donate $1,000 each with the rest coming from auctions and fundraising on the night” He said

“Everything goes to the McGrath Foundation”

Mr Hayter said the event wouldn’t be possible without sponsors and the help of volunteers Anne Pride, Josie Caputo and Sue Rickleman who work tirelessly to make the day happen.

Sponsors for the event are Shakespeare Partners Chartered Accountants, Galvin Engineering, Habitat Finance, Philips Technology Transport, Soco Realty, Cottesloe Constructions, Rhino Water Tanks, Phoenix Insurance Brokers, Fuller Fitness, Structurre Consulting Engineers, Roadbend Jaguar, Breakwater Tavern and Lenton Brae Wines.

Mr Hayter said the event came about as the club wanted to give back to the community.

“As one of the bigger clubs we felt it was important we did a community based event”

“This event helps to engage all of the wives and girlfriends at the club, as well as the community as a whole.

Although not a traditional football colour, Mr Hayter said that so far the players have enthusiastically embraced the pink jumpers.

“Twenty years ago the players may have told us to get stuffed but they have really warmed to it (the jumpers)”

“They have been great, last year they really enjoyed it”

Wesley Football Club President Rod Phillips said some players even used them as training jumpers.

“We sold the jumpers to the players at $100 each and they all wanted one,” He said

“Even the players who didn’t play, the rest of the club guys asked if there were any jumpers for sale”

The Pink Tigers Day begins at 1:30pm next Saturday, April 28 at South Oval at Curtin University and runs till 7:30pm that night, with the Wesley Curtin B Grade match against Scarborough commencing at 2:30pm and the E2 game against Cockburn Lakes at 5:00pm.

Tickets are limited and can be purchased by contacting Mark Hayter on 0410 551 734 or mhayter@myplace.net.au.
