Jones honoured by Amateur league

The West Coast Eagles have been dedicated supporters of grass roots football since inception and as part of that commitment has sponsored the WA Amateur Colts competition in recent years.

Divisions of the colts’ competition have been named after former players – Phil Scott, Ian Dargie, Drew Banfield and Laurie Keene – and now a current day player, Brett Jones, has joined those players by having a new competition named in his honour.

All of those players have amateur roots with Scott (Scarborough), Dargie (North Beach), Banfield (University) and Keene (Innaloo) rising from amateur ranks to forge successful senior careers through the WAFL and then AFL.

Jones also began his football journey with the University club and was thrilled when asked if he would lend his name to the newest division.

The WA Amateur Football League has over 12,000 registered players and its season across all grades will begin tomorrow with more than 100 matches played.

The West Coast Eagles-sponsored colts’ competition will see 52 teams compete in six divisions, a significant increase on the 44 teams that were fielded at under-19 level in 2008 – even allowing for the inclusion of five team from the now defunct Sunday Football League.

Of the 57 clubs who will step out this weekend, 41 have colts teams and 11 have two colts teams.
