John Davies takes home Service to Sport Award

The WAAFL, WASF and the RAC congratulate WAAFL stalwart John Davies on winning the RAC Insurance May Campbell Service to Sport Award.

The Service to Sport Award recognises the contribution made by an individual to their sport or sporting organisation through their long and outstanding service.

The RAC WA Sports Star awards held in the Riverview Rooms at Optus Stadium on February 8 saw Davies take home the award along with Anne Stingemore from Athletics WA and Elsma Merillo from Netball WA.

When John Davies joined the board of the WA Amateur Football League, he was in it for the long haul. First as a board member for 27 years, then as president for the following 20 years.

John cut his teeth in the amateurs as a founding member of North Beach before going on to play more than 200 games and served the club not only as a player but also as captain, coach, president, secretary, treasurer and committee member.

Under his reign as president, the WAAFL has improved its financial position by nine percent each year, introduced a Hall of Fame, inaugurated Integrated football for athletes with a disability, and started new revenue streams such as trademark licensing. Remarkably, among many honours John was made a life member of the WAAFL almost 30 years ago, and in 2016 he became a life member of the WAFC.

Celebrating it’s 61st anniversary, the Sports Star awards night, with nominations coming from members of the WA Sports Federation, is steeped in history,

There were a number of other awards presented on the night – WA Sports Star of the Year Award, Railtrain Junior Sports Star, Channel 7 Perth Team of the Year, KPMG Coach of the Year, Community TAB Official of the Year and the RAC Insurance Beyond Sport – John Gilmour Medal.
