Grand Finalists Meet Again

Round 18 of the WAAFL’s A Grade kicks off this weekend with a rematch between the two teams promoted to A Grade at the end of last season.

Whitford and West Coast Cowan meet for the second time this season with both teams looking to reinforce their standing heading towards the finals.

Whitford currently sit fourth with nine wins while West Coast Cowan is sitting seventh below Trinity Aquinas and University.

In the 2007 B Grade grand final, West Coast Cowan defeated Whitford 13.9 (87) to 8.10 (58) at Fremantle Oval to claim their first C.J. Jamieson Cup after wining the C Grade’s Grosvenor Cup the previous year.

Under the relegation and promotion system both grand finalists moved up, replacing Collegians and Hamersley Carine who finished the 2007 season at the bottom of the A Grade ladder.

The last meeting of these two teams this season saw Whitford comfortably win at MacDonald Park 19.7 (121) to 12.10 (82) in round eight with leading goal kickers Tyson Feist and John D’Sylva kicking four and five goals respectively.

West Coast Cowan have not had the best run at City Beach Oval, wining only twice this year at their own home ground and have not been able to defeat any of the top five teams this season.

Whitford have a similar away record for the season, only wining three times on the road against University, Stirling and Trinity Aquinas.

Whitford are chasing their first Sandover Shield having last tasted premiership glory in B Grade in 2003.

The two teams go head to head at 2.30pm this Saturday at City Beach Oval.
