Cockburn Lakes Celebrate 30 Years

The Cockburn Lakes Warriors Amateur Football club celebrated their 30th anniversary on the weekend when they took on Bullcreek Leeming at Anning Park in Jandakot.

The Warriors are a proud football club with a strong history including 10 grand finals and 7 premierships.

Arguably the clubs greatest period came in the mid 1980’s when the Warriors won 5 premierships in a row.

The Warriors were a very strong side back in the 80’s club president Lionel McQueen said, who has been president for 21 of the 30 years.

“In 1984 we won our first premiership, we then won five in a row. We worked our way into C Grade, but I think we had some players that could have played in the B grade. We were very powerful.”

Prior to 1980 the Warriors were recognised as the Robbs Jetty Football Club and McQueen said it was the coach’s idea at the time to change its name.

“Before 1980 we used to play social football at Robbs Jetty and then in 1980 we joined the amateurs. In 1984 Maccy Ford our coach, came in and said the club needed to change its name. So it was his idea and the rest is history.”

He also said the Warriors have always been a strong club off-field as well.

“We have always been a pretty strong club supporter wise and things like that.”

McQueen expects a big crowd this weekend for the anniversary and said it should be a good night.

“We play Bullcreek. They were a great rivalry club we had back early years in the 80’s and early 90’s. We had some wonderful games, some real derby type games against them. And we hope some of their old boys will turn up tomorrow. We are expecting a big crowd tomorrow and we will continue on until about midnight.”

There is also extra incentive for the Warriors this weekend with Gavin Caporn and Corey ‘Hot dogs’ Pausin each playing their 100th games for the club.

Pausin has been around the club for many years now and is a player who can play in a variety of positions around ground while Caporn is a run and carry type player.
