Club champion receives strong support

ONE of Ocean Ridge’s greatest clubmen, Jon Sharp, has been appointed head coach of the West Australian State 16’s Talent Academy ahead of some of WA football’s brightest minds.

The move to appoint Sharp is one that has received wide-spread endorsement from those who were involved with the Ocean Ridge icon’s amateur career, which spanned over 10 seasons.

WA Football Commission High Performance Manager Jon Haines paid tribute to Sharp and the community coaching pathways which led him to the State job.

“To have coaches like Jon progress through the coaching pathway into these crucially important coaching roles is testament to the way the pathway has evolved,” Haines said.

After starting his coaching career with the Ocean Ridge JFC in 1995, the Ocean Ridge club champion of 1998, 2000 and 2004 was coach of the Ocean Ridge colts side in 2003 and 2004 and coach of the C Grade team in 2006 and 2007.

Sharp then progressed through to become West Perth’s Development Squad Coach before taking up an assistant’s position for the WA State 18’s side, which claimed this years’ National Championship in dominant fashion.

In his 10 seasons, Sharp was one of the most prominent and popular figures at Ocean Ridge, receiving many accolades including a Life Membership and being named in the team of the quarter century.

The 172 game veteran also won the Ocean Ridge League Best & Fairest a record six times (1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005) and the WAAFL C Grade Best & Fairest in 2002 and 2004. Amazingly both the 2002 Ocean Ridge and WAAFL Best & Fairest awards came while Sharp was a member of the Ocean Ridge Amateur Football Club Committee, and, the 2004 award’s while he was not only club captain but coach of the Ocean Ridge Colts side as well.

Sharp will take control of the WA State 16’s team for the next two years as a part of the WA Football Commissions rotation policy, replacing outgoing coach Trevor Williams.
