Amateur Stalwart Set for Game 450

COOLBINIA West Perth will celebrate a rare milestone this weekend when Scott Conway takes to the field for the 450th time.

Club President Paul Compe paid tribute to Conway, saying it was a pleasure to reflect back on the career of the man affectionately known as “Benny”, given the nickname due to his love of Richmond and Tiger great Brendon Gale.

“Benny’s nature is shy when it comes to receiving recognition” Compe said.

“But after 450 games the club believes it’s high time he received some acknowledgement”

Conway arrived at Coolbinia West Perth in 1994 when it was known as Coolbinia-Yokine, having previously played at the Bayswater and Mirrabooka football clubs. He was runner up in the club Best & Fairest in his first season in 1994, going one better in 1996 when he won the first of seven club Best and Fairest.

Not short of accolades, Conway captained the team from 1997 to 1999, was awarded his Life Membership in 2002 and in 2008 won the Best Clubman award.

Currently he coaches the reserves team, a position he has held since 2009 after coaching the league team in 2008.

Compe says that Conway has partly attributed his longevity in football due to the support of his family, some who also hold positions at the football club.

“Benny is strongly supported off the field by his wife Julie (Team Manager), son Benjamin (Boundary umpire) and daughter (Ashleigh)” he said.

Conway will run onto the field for the 450th time this Saturday, July 2nd at 12:35pm when Coolbinia West Perth Reserves take on Bassendean at Coolbinia Reserve.
