West Coast Eagles State Amateur Program Hits the Sweet Spot

As the West Coast Eagles State Amateur Under 23s squad prepares to take on the WA Country Football League State Team this weekend, one player from last years side is a notable omission.

After claiming the Neil Judge Medal for his best on ground performance in WA’s thrilling one point victory over the Victorian Amateur Football Association, Stirling’s Aaron Sweet was recruited to East Perth where he has been showcasing the skills which saw him succeed at the highest level of amateur football.

The 21 year old Sweet has been impressing crowds and state selectors alike in the WAFL, using his blistering pace to earn WAFL State Squad selection for their match against Victoria later this month.

Joining him at East Perth and in WAFL state selection is Dean Cadwallader, a member of the 2009 West Coast Eagles State Amateur Colts Side which was narrowly defeated by the WA State 16’s in last years encounter.

Sweet has averaged 25 touches a game for the Royals so far in 2010 whilst 19 year old Cadwallader has averaged 17 touches and a goal a game, a testament to the West Coast Eagles State programs and the high standard of football in the WAAFL.

Completing the trifecta at East Perth is last years West Coast Eagles State Amateur Under 23’s captain, Jamie Birrell, who was picked up by East Perth after being awarded best on ground by the WA coaches in last years win over the VAFA.

Other members of the victorious 2009 West Coast Eagles State Amateur Under 23’s squad who went on to play WAFL football in 2010 include Kelmscott’s Gabe Orr and James Read who got selected by premiership favourites Claremont after strong state showings.

Both Orr and Read have been named in the extended West Coast Eagles State Amateur Under 23’s squad this year.

The West Coast Eagles State Amateur Under 23’s begin their campaign this weekend as they clash with old foes the WA Country Football Leage at Gil Fraser Reserve, this Friday the 7th May, with the Colts kicking things off at 5:25pm ahead of the main clash at 7:15pm.

Following up on Wednesday 26th of May the West Coast Eagles State Amateur Under 23’s will take on the Peel Football League at Gil Fraser Reserve in preperation for the main state clash against the South Australian Amateur Football League on the 13th June.
