WA takes on Tasmania in Championships

Western Australia will play Tasmania for the first time since 1994 at amateur football level when the West Coast Eagles Under 23 State Amateur team plays Tasmania North at Devonport on Sunday 1st June.

This match will be the first of the next Australian Amateur Football Council Under 23 Triennial Championships involving West Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia. South Australia won the last triennial series that concluded in 2007. West Australia finished second.

Tasmania North is a representative team of the Northern Tasmanian Football League and the Northern Tasmanian Football Association. Tasmania rejoined the AAFC in 2007.

West Coast Eagles Under 23 State Amateur Coach, Wayne Langborne, is looking forward to the challenge of playing in Tasmania.

“The Tassie conditions are going to be a culture shock to some of the lads but it’s another fantastic opportunity where the best under 23 players in our competition can wear the West Australian State jumper with pride. We’ve had a huge turnover of players from last year but after six weeks training and three practice games we feel we are more than ready and are really looking forward to the challenge.”

The twenty-two man squad had its final training session at Gilbert Fraser Oval in North Fremantle on Wednesday night followed by a players’ dinner. The squad departs for Tasmania on Friday night.

The final squad is:

Ryan Atkinson – Willetton
