Vale George Meiers
16 Feb, 2011
THE West Australian football community is in mourning with WA Amateur Football League and WAFL stalwart George Meiers sadly passing away last week.
Meiers was a long time servant of the game as a player, coach and umpire, beginning his WAAFL career in 1937 for North Fremantle and captaining them throughout their undefeated premiership season in 1939 before joining East Fremantle in the WAFL in 1940.
After joining the WAFL Meiers continued to impress; he won East Fremantle’s best and fairest in 1940, captained the side, played in the 1945 premiership and also earned selection in the WAFL state team.
After retiring from the WAFL Meiers returned to North Fremantle and was Vice-Captain of their 1946 A Grade premiership before taking up the position of WAFL central umpire in 1947.
He returned to North Fremantle as coach from 1951 to 1954, leading the side to the 1954 A Grade premiership and then returned to East Fremantle as coach in 1955 and 1956.
Meiers continued to be involved in football after his playing and coaching career serving as WAFL Assistant Umpire Advisor, WAFL Umpire Advisor and WAAFL Panel Umpires advisor from 1960 to 1982.
In recognition to his services to football he was awarded the NFL Merit Award in 1979.
The WA Amateur Football League wishes to express its condolences to the Meiers family.
