Teams Battle it out in First Weekend in the WAAFL

THE first round of the season got under way on the weekend with teams from B Grade and below battling it out at suburban grounds across Perth.

With 105 games played there were bound to be some shock results and it didn’t take long in the Drew Banfield Colts division with last years’ finalists, West Coast Cowan, going down to Wembley in windy conditions at Henderson Park.

The win set the tone for the day with the newly relegated Wembley beginning its push for an A Grade berth in style, defeating West Coast Cowan in both the B Reserves and B League matches.

In the newly restructured C1 Division it was much of the same as last years’ finalists Scarborough, Kelmscott and High Wycombe ran out big winners against Mosman Park, Bullcreek Leeming and Gosnells respectively.

Ocean Ridge were the big winners in C2, handing Lynwood Ferndale a 95 point thrashing at Ferndale Park while the home teams managed to get the points in all other first up matches.

Newly formed senior club Safety Bay had a tough first up match against Armadale, losing by 41 points, while last years’ D Grade finalists Dianella Morley suffered a shock loss on the road at the hands of Coolbellup.

Fellow new club Noranda also tasted its first loss of the season in C4 losing to Southern River at home by 13 points while Canningvale, in its first ever WAAFL match, put in an impressive performance to beat Nollamara by 44 points at Des Penman Reserve.

In perhaps a preview of the upcoming season A, B and C Grade clubs’ second, third and fourth teams took to the field against each other in D1, D2, and E1 – Except for newly formed single team Swan Districts who posted an impressive win away from home against Wanneroo.
