Spider to celebrate 400-game milestone
10 Aug, 2009
THE heart and soul of Brentwood Booragoon Amateur Football Club over the last two decades, Mark ‘Spider’ Sinden, will reach a massive milestone next Saturday, August 15, when he become the club’s first player to notch up 400 games.
Club President Rhys Jenkins congratulated Sinden on the milestone, describing it as “a testimony to his commitment, love and loyalty for Brentwood Booragoon.”
If playing for such a long time is a testimony to Sinden’s commitment, love and loyalty for his club, the accomplishments he’s achieved along the way are a testimony to the talent he possesses.
The man known as ‘Spider’ has collected many accolades in his career but none more important than the three premierships in 1993, 1997 and 2007. In fact, all five of the club’s premierships have come within Spider’s time at the club.
Jenkins describes Sinden as: “one of those players you wish you had dozens of”. And with a list of achievements and accolades including a Life Membership awarded in 1998 and a WAAFL Merit Certificate for outstanding service, it’s not hard to imagine why.
Also among the long list of achievements are 11 club fairest and best awards, including in the premiership years of 1993 and 1997, as well as a league fairest and best in 2004.
Throughout his career Sinden has also imparted his experience and football wisdom to Brentwood Booragoon, most notably in 2007 when he took the D Reserves to the club’s fifth premiership as a captain coach.
In that same season, Sinden became the games record holder for the Brentwood Booragoon Amateur Football Club, overtaking long-time servant and life member Neil Smith’s record of 357 games. Sinden has gone on to play another two seasons since taking the record but vows to bow out of the WAAFL at the end of this season, hopefully on a high as Brentwood Booragoon chase an historic sixth flag.
Fittingly, the match against G-Grade rivals Wanneroo will double as a Sponsors and Life Members day at Karoonda Oval, a great event for the club and a great chance for both Brentwood Booragoon and the WAAFL to recognize one of Western Australia’s football’s champions.
