Six straight for North Beach
21 Sep, 2009
THE North Beach Amateur Football Club has created history this past Saturday at Medibank Stadium, taking home their record sixth straight A Grade premiership in dominating fashion against North Fremantle, winning by an eventual 37 points 10.13 (73) to 5.6 (36).
The flag cements North Beach’s place as one of the most dominant amateur football clubs in the WAAFL’s 80 year history with not only the past six premierships to their name but eight of the past ten – A WAAFL record.
On an overcast day it was North Fremantle who got off to a good start, power forwards Michael Minnervini and Karl Pirrottina getting early goals and having the Magpies up by 18 points before North Beach had fired a shot.
North Fremantle’s dominance didn’t last long though with North Beach’s experienced finals campaigners steadying the ship and taking control of the remainder of the quarter, kick 2 goals 4 and heading into the first break only down by two points.
A light shower made the second quarter a scrappier affair with both teams struggling in the wintery conditions, North Beach’s 2 goals 1 enough to see them take a three point lead into the major break.
It was all North Beach when the two sides emerged from the major break, A Grade leading goal kicker Mitch Holbrook started to take control of the forward line and the Tiger midfield started to get on top as they piled on 3 goals 3 and, more importantly, kept North Fremantle goalless to get a four goal lead heading into the last.
As the weather cleared up the flood gates opened and North Beach’s drive from the midfield continued, kicking another 3 goals and putting the game out of reach for North Fremantle.
In a sorry day for North Fremantle they managed only one goal after half time, their forward line like the weather on the day: ominous, but doing no real damage as North Beach claimed perhaps their most impressive flag in an emotional day for the club.
Wingman Steven Bandy was awarded the B.J Giles medal for best on ground, closely followed by Simon Pearce and Mitch Holbrook.
In the Phil Scott Colts University defeated a gallant Collegians side who fought back from 16 points down at half time to be leading with minutes to go, only to go down by five points in a heartbreaking loss. The win was a fitting result for University who finished the season minor premiers with 14 wins.
The reserves saw Trinity Aquinas and Whitford battling it out and in another see-sawing affair it was Trinity Aquinas who managed to maintain an early break to hold off an inaccurate Whitford. The win cements Trinity Aquina’s position as the most dominant A Reserves side, playing off in the past four Grand Finals and winning the past two, back to back.
