Round 13 Recap | C2 Men

Round 13 in C2 saw Piara Waters up against Belmont District in a NAIDOC week game. Belmont debuted a specially designed NAIDOC Guernsey for the match.

Piara Waters came out firing, slotting 2 quick goals in the opening minutes. Belmont hit back just as fast, matching them with 2 goals of their own and narrowly pulling ahead with a behind. They built on that lead with a 3rd and 4th goal to take early control. A free kick helped Piara Waters respond with their 3rd, before 2 more goals put them back in front. They closed the quarter with a behind, ending a tense first term with a narrow lead.

Belmont came out strong in the 2nd quarter, determined to reclaim the lead, and quickly added their 5th goal. Piara Waters responded with a behind before Belmont added pressure with 3 more behinds. However, it was Piara Waters who found their rhythm, slotting another 2 more behinds and 3 goals to take a solid 52-34 lead into halftime. Belmont opened the 3rd quarter with a behind, but Piara Waters answered swiftly with a goal. Belmont then narrowed the gap with a 6th behind and a burst of 3 back-to-back goals, tightening the margin. Piara Waters interrupted their goal streak with 2 behinds, then pushed back hard, sealing the quarter with their 10th goal to keep their lead intact.

Piara Waters opened the final quarter strong with a behind and a quick goal, but Belmont answered with one of their own. Piara Waters kept the pressure on with another 2 goals, taking their total goal tally to 13. Belmont then held the momentum for the last 13 minutes of the match, successfully keeping Piara Waters from adding any points to their score while they desperately fought to close the gap. They added 2 behinds and 2 late goals, including a final one just before the siren, to finish the game on a high.

Although Belmont fought hard, they were unable to gain the lead, and Piara Waters took the victory in Round 13 by a close 10 points. Belmont still sits just one spot higher than Piara Waters on the ladder in 3rd, with Piara Waters in 4th. Both teams are looking like contenders for the fast-approaching finals.
