Preliminary final weekend in the WAAFL
02 Sep, 2009
It’s preliminary final weekend in the WAAFL with B through to H grades taking the field in hope of earning a chance to contest the Grand Finals next weekend.
After a long home and away season only three teams remain in each grade and this weekend’s preliminary final blockbusters will lead to either elation or devastation with the winners advancing through to the Grand Final (And promotion for some) while the losers face the prospect of an early mad Monday.
B Grade will see Mount Lawley take on Willetton at Claremont Oval for a shot at Wembley next week, Mount Lawley looking to regain A Grade status after a sustained period in the B Grade while Willetton look to continue a giant killing run which saw them take apart third placed Swan Athletic in an upset last weekend.
The day will start at 10:45am when Kingsley’s Drew Banfield Colts take on Mount Lawley’s, the winner getting a chance to rectify losses to Scarborough already in the finals series. Scarborough’s colts will take the field in the B Reserves at 12:35pm against Willetton, with the Willetton and Mount Lawley clashing in the league match at 2:30pm.
Reigning Sunday Football League premiers Gosnell’s will tackle Warnbro in C Black division at EFTel Oval with the winner getting the chance to knock over Kalamunda for the first time this season. Gosnell’s Ian Dargie colts side will tackle Wanneroo to kick off the day at 10:45am while Brentwood Booragoon tackles another ex-Sunday Football League team in Thornlie in the reserves at 12:35pm.
The C Gold preliminary finals will take centre stage at Richard Guelfi Reserve this Saturday with minor premiers Kingsway looking to regain form and earn a shot at Maddington in the Grand Final.
Standing in their way is an Ocean Ridge side looking to get 3 sides through to the Grand Finals next weekend with their Laurie Keene Colts taking on Coolbinia West Perth in the morning before their reserves side tackles a High Wycombe out for revenge after losing a first up qualifying final to Ocean Ridge two weeks ago.
Kingsway Reserve will play host to the D Black finals with Quinns looking to continue their impressive run and hopefully make their first D Black Grand Final taking on Coolbellup, a team who’s survived all elimination finals so far and looking to go one better.
Quinns’ colts will also take to the field at Kingsway Reserve starting the day off with a main event preview against Coolbellup, followed by Carlisle and Swan Athletic at 12:30pm, Carlisle’s reserves looking to join their West Coast Eagles Colts already in the Grand Final.
D Gold will see another ex-Sunday Football League team vying for Grand Final positions as Canning vic Park South Perth take on Ellenbrook and Manning at Mills Park. The League match against Ellenbrook will be the first time the two sides have played each other since round 13 when Ellenbrook ran out 4 point winners.
Preliminary final weekend for the E Grade see’s long time WAAFL A Grade champions North Beach take on Wesley Curtin with the winner advancing through to battle North Fremantle next week, while North Fremantle’s reserves side takes to Forster Park against local rivals Fremantle CBC with a Grand Final spot on the line.
In the colts it’s University vs Trinity Aquinas with the winner earning a shot against Collegians in the inaugural Brett Jones Colts Grand Final next weekend.
F Grade has Collegians and Thornlie battling it out at Wyong Reserve while G Grade see’s Bassendean taking on Koongamia at Thornlie Oval playing curtain raiser to the H Grade Fremantle CBC vs Rossmoyne match.
