Preliminary Final Provides Last Chance
12 Sep, 2008
Finals action continues this weekend with the Western Australian Amateur Football League A grade’s preliminary final this Saturday at Medibank Stadium.
North Beach and Wesley Curtin go head to head in this year’s finals for the second time in what will be an epic encounter to determine who faces minor premiers North Fremantle? next week for the 2008 Sandover Shield.
Wesley Curtin are coming off a very successful week, not only with a comfortable 45 point win over Whitford last Saturday but also with Ben Goodall winning the C.J Jamieson Medal for A Grade Best and Fairest in his first WAAFL season.
North Beach didn’t fare as well last weekend, losing to North Fremantle by 41 points at Gil Fraser Reserve.
The two teams have met twice in the regular season with one win apiece, and once already in week one of the finals with North Beach beating Wesley Curtin 14.8 (92) to 11.13 (79) at South Oval.
Although being played at Medibank Stadium, this Saturday will seem like a home game for North Beach, with A Grade, A Reserve and WCE Phil Scott Colts teams all playing for a place in their grand finals.
North Beach is looking to make history with their fifth consecutive A grade premiership, having conquered Wembley to win the 2007 Shield for the seventh time in the last nine years.
Last season’s grand final victory saw North Beach join Wembley and Mt Lawley as the only WAAFL clubs to have won four consecutive A Grade premierships, while Wesley Curtin are chasing their first Sandover Shield.
The WAAFL? A Grade preliminary final kicks off 2.30pm this Saturday at Medibank Stadium, with the West Coast Eagles Phil Scott Colts preliminary between North beach and Scarborough at 10.45am and the A Reserve preliminary between North Fremantle and North Beach at 12.35pm.
