Ocean Ridge’s Tony O’Connell reaches 350 game milestone

OCEAN Ridge club champion Tony O’Connell will play his 350th game of WAAFL footy this weekend.

But his impressive games tally and personal accolades pale in comparison to his love for his family and the sense of community at his footy club.

O’Connell has won multiple club best and fairest awards, is the current reserves captain-coach, was voted club champion in 2008, won a premiership in 2015 and for seasons would kick bags of goals.

But his favourite memories are playing a game with his brothers Liam and Luke and having his son Jaxon down at the club.

Jax (4) helps his grandad Mick with the goal umpiring and O’Connell’s wife Tracy brings their two-year-old Daniel to watch big games and milestones.

O’Connell was awarded Ocean Ridge’s league side best and fairest last season at age 35.

Club president Jon Knox said it was an impressive accomplishment.

“He is one of the best footballers, leaders and people we’ve ever had,” he said.

O’Connell is now relishing the opportunity to help guide young men.

“For me now it’s all about team success… you’re going to remember it so much more if it’s team success as opposed to having five guys who dominate,” he said.
