North Beach Claim Record Seventh in a Row
13 Sep, 2010
After eighteen weeks of regular season and four weeks of finals the 2010 WAAFL season has come to a close, with regular season dominance asserted during the finals.
Once again North Beach has plenty to celebrate this off season, with both their senior sides successful in last weekend’s grand finals.
Despite struggling at the start of the season, North Beach bounced back and once again showed just why they have been the most successful amateur club of the last decade.
After unsuccessful grand finals in 2002 and 2004, the North Beach reserves finally got their hands on a premiership, defeating North Fremantle 10.7 (67) to the Magpies’ 5.7 (30).
The main event of the day was of course the league grand final, which saw North Beach claim their seventh straight A grade premiership over an unlucky Whitford side 18.14 (122) to 7.6 (48), with the Beach’s Kyle Riemann earning the BJ Giles Medal for best on ground.
Lead by a strong back line that rebounded the ball away from the Whitford forwards all day, North Beach controlled the majority of the game after Whitford kicked the first goal to get on the board.
North Beach coach Bill Duckworth has a vast collection in his trophy cabinet with two AFL premierships, one A grade premiership as a player and now a whopping ten flags in 12 years as a coach.
Collegians went an impressive four for four on grand final weekend, with wins for both B grade sides and the Brew Banfield and Brett Jones colts.
They suffered just two losses all year between their three B grade teams including an undefeated reserves season and defeated Maddington, Hamersley Carine and Kingsley in the league, reserves and Drew Banfield colts respectively.
Collegians’ Brett Jones Colts side overcame an inaccurate Fremantle CBC 8.5 (53) to 6.15 (35).
Despite losing to Collegians in the B grade final, Maddington will have a lot to on their mind this summer with the former SFL heavyweight once again climbing the ranks and starting the season in a new grade.
Heading down to B grade however courtesy of an unsuccessful year will be Wembley and Stirling, the former after just one year back.
New to B grade next year will be Kalamunda, who picked up a close win over Scarborough in the C Black grand final after their reserves had comfortable 25 point win over Scarborough.
Joining them will be newly crowned C gold premiers Wanneroo, who overpowered Bullcreek Leeming 16.12 (108) to 5.7 (37) in the grand final between the division’s top two teams. .
Bullcreek’s reserves side fared much better, achieving a premiership victory in a five point win over Warnbro to go with an outstanding undefeated season.
The other club with great success last Saturday was Trinity Aquinas, winning their second Phil Scott premiership in an extremely one sided 68 point win over Fremantle CBC, limiting CBC to just 15 points.
While this would have been a disappointing loss for CBC’s colts side, who had lost just one game all season, they will have some consolation with their F grade team taking out the premiership with a 67 to 48 point win over Scarborough.
Scarborough went winless over their three grand finals; having lost just one game all year in C Black, and both their reserves and F grade sides going undefeated for the year, two of seven teams to produce the same result.
The other teams to successfully go through the entire season unbeaten with a premiership win in hand also were Collegians’ B reserve, Bullcreek Leeming’s C Gold reserves, Canning’s D grade team and Kalamunda’s Laurie Keen Colts.
Both Scarborough’s undefeated teams finished with a grand final loss, as did Whitford’s H grade side, going down to Warnbro by 22 points.
