New General Manager for Community Football
03 Dec, 2009
A NEW General Manager has been appointed for Senior Metropolitan Community Football in Western Australia following the departure of former CEO Brendan Cullinan, who has accepted a High Performance role with the Department of Sport and Recreation.
Senior Metropolitan Community Football encompasses the WA Amateur Football League, WA Women’s Football League, Mercantile Football Association and Peel Football League and includes more than 250 teams.
New General Manager, Cameron Agnew, who will commence in the role on January 11, 2010, said he was excited about the opportunity to oversee WA’s community competitions after spending the last three years as Recreational Services Manager with the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River.
“I’m really looking forward to being completely involved in footy in a professional capacity,” Mr Agnew said. “Football is in a strong position at the moment and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone involved and another exciting year ahead.”
Mr Agnew previously worked for the West Australian Football Commission in a Development Officer’s role in the Goldfields and was also Chairman of the Goldfields Regional Football Development Council.
He has also umpired league football in the Goldfields, spent three years as fitness advisor for the WA State Country Football Team, three years as rehabilitation coordinator for Claremont Football Club and more recently, headed up the South West Future Directions committee.
Mr Agnew said his starting point in the General Manager’s role would be meeting stakeholders to learn more about issues facing community football and where the challenges lie. He will also review local Future Directions documents and engage clubs on growing the game, provision of grounds, coaches, umpires and support staff.
WA Amateur Football League president John Davies congratulated Mr Agnew on his appointment and said he was looking forward to the year ahead under his new leadership and direction.
“I’m confident we’ve got another big season ahead and that Cameron will be able to continue and build upon work that has been done to ensure the ongoing success of metropolitan community football in Western Australia,” Mr Davies said.
WAFC Director of Football Grant Dorrington echoed Mr Davies’ sentiments, describing Mr Agnew as an ideal candidate for this important community position.
“Cameron has a wealth of experience in the football industry and his recent experience with local government and football facilities gives him a great advantage in championing the cause and ongoing benefits of being involved with our great game at grassroots level,” Mr Dorrington said.
“We all look forward to working with Cameron when he commences next month.”
