National Volunteer Week: Celebrating Darrell Cowie – The Backbone of SNESA Football Club.

Since 1996, Darrell Cowie has been a fixture at SNESA Football Club – both on and off the field. With 334 games under his belt and more than 25 years of volunteering, Darrell’s impact on the club is nothing short of extraordinary!
What started as a simple suggestion – “You’d be perfect for the treasurer role, you’re an accountant!” – sparked a lifelong commitment to the club. From that moment on, Darrell threw himself into every opportunity to serve. Over the years, he’s worn many hats: treasurer (25 years), bar manager (15 years), reserves team manager (10 years), WAAFL delegate, and council liaison for ground and facility bookings.
For Darrell, a typical footy week involves much more than just showing up. He’s behind the bar on Thursday nights for selection, restocking and preparing for game day. On Saturdays, if SNESA is at home, he’s there from midday until usually midnight – managing the bar, supporting club functions, and doing whatever’s needed to keep the day running smoothly. Even during away games, he’s often present to support the team and ensure umpires are paid. And in between? He’s sourcing stock and managing club finances – often unseen, but never unappreciated.
When asked what being part of a community club like SNESA means to him, Darrell doesn’t hesitate: “I love seeing the club succeed in winning games and providing an environment which our players want to be part of and keep returning to year after year. I can then see the end results of the effort I put in.”
He’s also clear on just how important volunteers are to local footy: “Community footy clubs don’t operate without volunteers, so they are vitally important. I’ve seen plenty come and go over the years, and they’ve all helped keep the club alive for nearly 50 years.”
Darrell Cowie is living proof of how one dedicated individual can shape the culture, stability, and spirit of a club. His contribution spans decades, and his legacy is woven into the fabric of SNESA.
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, the Perth Football League proudly acknowledges and thanks Darrell – and all the volunteers like him – who give their time, energy, and heart to keep community footy thriving.
