Mount Lawley Hawks Heritage Week
27 Jun, 2008
The Mount Lawley Hawks have been one of the most successful Western Australian Amateur football clubs since their inception in 1963 and it is that heritage that will be celebrated at Hamer Park this Saturday 28th June when they take on Swan Athletic in B, B Reserve and Colts.
Like their AFL (VFL) namesake the Hawks were a powerhouse from the late 1970s through to the early part of the ’90s, securing A Grade Premierships in 1979, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992. The club showed a great capacity to build a successful team when they won A Colts Premierships in 1980, 1981 and 1984. The club had a very strong culture of success when fielding a C Grade team they won a Premiership in their debut year 1963 and followed up with flags in 1977, 1984, 1985 and 1992.
During that period of dominance the Hawks had All Australian representatives in Brad Dunn (1985, 1987 and 1988), Wayne Hardman (1985 and 1987), Billy Armstrong (1988), Justin Cook (1988), Leigh Sprylan (1988), Geoff Horton (1989) and Ben Stewart (1991).
Current Fremantle Docker defender Antoni Grover played in the 1997 B Colts Premiership and is the only Mt Lawley player to have progressed to AFL level. Grover was runner up in the Doig Medal in 2007 and is on the verge of becoming only the second indigenous player to have played 150 games for the Fremantle Football Club. The Hawks are very proud to have been a part of his development and would love to welcome him back at the end of his AFL career.
The current crop of players are well placed to return the club to the glory years, sitting in second position on the B Grade ladder and showing unbridled commitment, discipline and focus that has the clubrooms abuzz at the halfway point of the season. A tough month lies ahead for the boys and this Saturday looms as a crunch game against the 4th placed Swan Athletic. A win will go a long way to securing a top two finish, whilst a loss will bring the Hawks back to the pack.
The proud tradition of the Mount Lawley Hawks Amateur Football Club is evident today in the strong commitment shown by club members and players alike. The club welcomes all past players, members and spectators to come down to Hamer Park this Saturday for what is sure to be a great day for the Mount Lawley Amateur Football Club.
