Match of the Week – Whitford vScarborough
25 Jul, 2008
The round 14 Keystart Home Loans Match of the Week is in the A Grade competition between Whitford and Scarborough at Macdonald Park. These two teams share a great rivalry and mutual respect that should see a good contest that could shape the finals race and relegation zone heading into the last month of footy.
The Whitford Warriors are enjoying a solid 2008 season, after a slow start which saw three straight losses, albeit against the top three sides of the A Grade competition. The Warriors earned promotion back into A Grade after spending the 2007 season in B Grade where they were Grand Finalists, eventually losing to West Coast Cowan.
Whitford has been served well all year with strong, consistent performances from Michael Healey, John D’Sylva and Tyson (Bunny) Feist. The player development at the club is evident with many Colts making the step up to A Grade footy, not least of all Brett Nielsen who has had a great year at full back.
Both Colts sides have been performing admirably with the Phil Scott Colts moving into finals contention and the Laurie Keen Colts having a great win against the strong TA’s last week. Players to watch in the future are Josh Caporn, Chris Quelch, Sean Buckingham and Travis Davies.
Scarborough League side has had a tough year with only three wins on the board and a fight on their hands to stay in the A Grade competition in 2009. With the League side struggling, focus has turned to rebuilding and nurturing the Colts. For the first time since 1989, Scarborough has been able to field two Colts sides and both are in the finals hunt. The F Grade team has improved on previous years output and is in fifth.
Scarborough know that this weekend is very important for the future of the club and it is therefore being treated as a ‘Grand Final’ as League and Reserves losses here could result in relegation that affects numbers, sponsorship and finances. Scarborough are a proud club and will give it their all this weekend and pray for A Grade survival.
Jimmy Nunan, Blair Ranford, Jessie Bullied and Robert Thomson have been strong contributors in a tough year and many Colts have been blooded which will bode well for the future.
Whitford Warriors would like to extend a warm welcome to all WAGs for this week’s Ladies Day. Food and drink is included and a jukebox will be available in the clubrooms.
The Annual Warriors Cup and Auction Night will be held on the 9th of August at the Club. This is a great night to come down have a few drinks, bet on a few horse races and bid for great items that will be on show.
Scarborough’s most important fundraising event for the season will be on Thursday, 14th August 2008 at Millington Reserve in the form of a “Sportsmen’s/Auction Night” with guest speakers John Barnes and Dean Wallis. The event is supported by Mouse Promotions and will commence at 7.00 pm. Tickets are $25.00 each which includes a light dinner and can be obtained by calling Greg Bryant on 93213456 (office) or 0410523763.
Lighting will be upgraded at Millington Reserve for 2009 which will improve training facilities and is part of an ongoing committee objective to improve the standard of Scarborough’s home.
