Match of the Week – Swan Athletic V Scarborough

The Keystart Home Loans Match of the Week for round six of the WAAFL season is the B grade match between Swan Athletic and Scarborough at Fawell Park this Saturday.

Scarborough are coming off an excellent round five with big wins over Swan View in league by 86 points, reserves by 67 and by a season high of 108 in the colts.

Swan Athletic had a less than desirable weekend against Willetton, with the league team coming out 11 point victors but the colts and reserves going down by 68 and 35 points respectively.

Swan Athletic are currently sitting third on the league ladder with just one loss for the season against Mt Lawley in round four while Scarborough are seventh with just a draw and a win to their name.

In the Drew Banfield colts Scarborough are sitting on top of the ladder tied with Bullcreek Leeming with five wins from five outings, while Swan Athletic sit at the opposite end of the table along with Wembley and Swan View yet to win a game this season.

The reserves ladder for B grade sees Swan Athletic sitting eighth with only a four point win in round four against Mt Lawley for the season. Two games clear from them are Scarborough, who is tied with three other teams sitting on 12 premiership points for the season.

This Saturday is also the Swan Athletic annual past players’ reunion, with more than 200 people and invited past players set to attend.

Swan Athletic president Ralph Cipro said the reunion was a chance to get players back involved with the club.

“The stories of yesteryear will become bigger and better,” he said.

Also this weekend the D grade Swan Athletic teams will go head to head with rivals Swan Valley for the first time in more than 30 years at Swan Valley Sporting Complex.

While the two clubs have not faced each other in awhile, Cipro says the local derby will be very special.

“We do have a rivalry being that they’re just down the road from us,” he said.

“We’ve had the most responses ever to the reunion. We hope to make it a fun day for the family.”

The action at Fawell Park kicks off at 10.45am with the colts’ game followed at 12.35pm by the reserves and ending with the league match at 2.30pm.

The Swan Athletic/Swan Valley matches kick off at 12.35pm with the reserves and 2.30pm for the league game.
