Match of the Week – Kingsway v Maddington
28 May, 2009
The Keystart Home Loans Match of the Week for round seven of the WAAFL season is the C Gold clash between former Sunday Football League rivals Kingsway and Maddington at Kingsway Reserve.
This top of the table clash will be a test for both teams, with a strong rivalry going as far back as the 1988 SFL Grand Final, which saw Kingsway victorious over Maddington by 16 points after being down by 14 with ten minutes left in the season.
The 2008 SFL season saw Maddington performing strongly all year to finish second on the league ladder before bowing out in the preliminary final to eventual runners up Kenwick 8.12 (60) to 13.13 (73). Maddington’s reserves finished the season third with just three losses and defeated Thornlie by six points to win the reserves premiership.
After the collapse of the SFL Maddington have been the benchmark of C Gold until a shock loss last week to Lynwood Ferndale saw them slip from first to third, one game behind Ocean Ridge and ladder leaders Kingsway.
Maddington’s reserves are in a similar spot, with just one loss from five outings and four consecutive wins to sit third behind Ocean Ridge and the first placed High Wycombe.
Kingsway are sitting on top of the league ladder with an undefeated record six weeks into the 2009 season with an average winning margin of 39 points.
Their reserves haven’t had the same good fortune with only a round four win over Cockburn Lakes to their names to sit seventh, just one game behind the fifth placed Kenwick.
Formerly known as Wanneroo Football Club in the SFL, Kingsway was introduced into the WAAFL last year in the D Grade competition and were elevated to C Grade after taking out the 2008 premiership against Ballajura 15.13 (103) to 10.11 (71).
Kingsway’s backline have been very consistent so far this season and have been the cornerstone to their continued success.
New recruits that have stood out for Kingsway this year have been Drew Kernaghan (from Swan Valley), Rahim Rohizat (North Hobart), Jay Rakich (Wickham Wolves) and Justin Woods (Whitfords).
Upcoming events for Kingsway this year include the Ladies Day Clash For Breast Cancer Research on Saturday 20th June and the annual Past Players and Sponsor day on August 8th.
Kingsway’s major sponsors for 2009 include Dale Alcock homes, Debbie Lanario’s The Good Guys Joondalup and McFarlane’s Cabinets Osborne Park.
The Kingsway Football Club recently unveiled its new facilities, which include a brand new playing surface for football as well as new light towers and a 400+ bay car park.
