Game of the round: Willetton v Kingsway
The start of the 2025 Life Without Barriers Integrated premiership season got underway at Burrendah Reserve in a highly anticipated game between last years A division premiers Willetton and an ever-improving Kingsway.
The game started with Willetton dominating the ruck work winning most of the first quarter clearances. With pressure coming from all over the ground, neither team could find any momentum or ball control.
The first goal came from Tyson Worthington in the late stages to see Willetton up 1.3.9 to 0.1.1.
As the siren sounded for the second quarter, The play began to open with Willetton dominating in the mid field, the blues were in control and were moving the ball with ease as they opened up plenty of scoring opportunities. It was Kingsway’s defence that stopped Willetton from piling on the goals. Daniel Donegan got the ball rolling with an early goal which was closely followed by Jack Riley bagging a goal of his own to extend the margin at half time to 14 points in favour of the home team.
Kingsway came out with a completely different attitude and play style to begin the third quarter. The mid field standing strong and putting Willetton onto the back foot early. With a couple of quick goals, Kingsway were back within touching distance giving Willetton an almighty scare heading towards the final quarter. Daniel Donegan again provided Willetton with a crucial goal as the blues would hold a 7-point lead heading into the final break.
Kingsway would again start the last quarter off in dominating fashion, winning multiple hit outs, clearing the ball to leading forwards and putting the pressure on Willetton’s back line early on. Willetton’s back line, led by Sean Wilson and Jacob Wills, held their own and applied pressure to Kingsway forwards as they struggled in front of the goals. Kingsway’s missed opportunities in front of goal would prove costly, as the Roos added 0.6 to Willetton’s 1.0 in the final quarter. The blues opening their title defence with a gutsy 5.6.36 to 3.11.29 win at home.
