Game of the week: Curtin Uni v High Wycombe

On a very cool Saturday morning at Wyong Reserve, Curtin Uni Wesley came into the game as server underdogs and hunting their first win of the season against High Wycombe.

Curtin Uni started the game off with a strong defensive presence, preventing any sort of High Wycombe attack in the early stages as the bulldogs would dominate the mid field game for the first half of the opening term. Mid way through the opening term, the tide began to change and Curtin Uni would find them selves controlling the play.

The high Wycombe defence was standing strong but after conceding a goal late in the quarter, the tigers would take a slim 6-point lead heading into the first break.

Both teams would then begin to find some flow with the ball and the scores started to slowly begin to follow. High Wycombe would find their opening goal through Josh Thompson, but Curtin Uni would go down the other end and reply with a goal themselves to keep high Wycombe on the back foot. A quarter that saw both teams kick 2 goals each, would see Curtin Uni ahead by 8 points heading into the main break.

As the sun started to warm the ground, the play got even hotter as a stale mate to begin the third with neither team able to move the ball forward. High Wycombe managed to get the first clearance of the quarter and found it deep in their forward 50 but would only muster a behind and their only score for that quarter.

The longer the quarter went on the more Curtin Uni would find themselves with momentum and a late goal in the quarter would see the margin blow out to 13 points by the final break.

Curtin Uni had all the answers in the last quarter as they would find an early goal to extend the margin to 19 points. High Wycombe’s defence would do everything they could to try stop the attack from Curtin Uni, but nothing was working as again Curtin Uni would find the big sticks through Jacob Miller with a stunning snapshot that would see the margin blow out to a game high 27 points and making it tough for a high Wycombe come back. A late goal to the bulldogs all but sealed their fate, as the final siren sounded and Curtin Uni players streamed from the bench, they would pick up their first win of the 2025 season over the High Wycombe Bulldogs.
