Vilification

Vilification is any act that humiliates, intimidates, or insults a person or group because of who they are. It usually relates to protected characteristics such as:

  • Race or ethnicity
  • Religion
  • Gender identity
  • Sexual orientation
  • Disability

It can include abusive comments, gestures, slurs, threats, ridicule or behaviour that creates a hostile or unsafe environment.

In a sports context, vilification is any behaviour that demeans or targets someone based on their identity, whether on-field, on the sideline, online or within the club environment.

Vilification has no place in our game. Every player, volunteer and supporter deserves to feel safe, respected and included. To learn more about creating positive sidelines and calling out poor behaviour, visit ourĀ Respect on the Sideline.
