Inaugural game for intellectually disabled

WA’s inaugural football match for people with an intellectual disability will be held this Sunday, August 16, at the Kingsway Football and Sporting Club following the recent success of ‘Come and Try’ days coordinated by the WA Amateur Football League (WAAFL)

Commencing at 3pm, the game has been scheduled by the WAAFL in conjunction with the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Recreation and Sport Network following the success of ‘Come and Try’ days at Lynwood Ferndale Amateur Football Club and Kingsway Football and Sporting Club over the last fortnight.

A large number of participants aged 16 and over took part in the initiative, prompting organisers to schedule another ‘Come and Try Day’ in Warnbro on August 23, as well as the match this Sunday.

The weekend’s game will be the first official match played as part of the WAAFL’s integrated football program and a vital step in the quest for a structured competition for 2010.

“The success of the program so far has been due to the tremendous support provided by the coaches, players and other volunteers at both clubs,” said WAAFL Chief Executive Officer Brendan Cullinan.

“To date we have had 68 people involved, highlighting the need for this program.”

Those wishing to participate in the match this Sunday need only to bring themselves, a water bottle, running (or football) shoes, shorts and football socks to the Kingsway Football and Sporting Club at 2:30pm to get involved and play.

For any queries regarding the program, this weekend’s match or scheduled Come and Try Days please contact the Community Football Office on 6380 1311 or email admin@cfwa.com.au
