Grand Final Weekend in WAAFL

AFTER a long, tightly contested season, Grand Final weekend has dawned upon us in what promises to be one of the finest finals series in the WAAFL’s 80 year history. Grades from B through to H are set to conclude this weekend with grounds all over metropolitan Perth playing host to some of the best football talent WA has to offer.

In the B Grade its two old rivals again battling it out for the major prize with minor premiers Wembley playing host to Mount Lawley at Claremont Oval, Wembley looking to regain a place in the A Grade after falling to relegation after a disappointing 2008 campaign.

Led by 2009 B Grade League Best & Fairest Shane Beros, the one-time A Grade stalwarts Mount Lawley will be chasing a spot in the A Grade competition for the first time since the mid-90’s. The Hamer Park Hawks at one time winning seven out a possible nine premierships, including four in five years: The one loss coming at the hands of Wembley.

The two sides will again clash this Saturday the 12th at Claremont Oval at 2:30pm following a heated Phil Scott Colts clash between Scarborough and Mount Lawley at 10:15pm and reserves match between Wembley and Scarborough at 12:20pm.

Another 2009 WAAFL Best & Fairest winner will be on show at Richard Guelfi Oval this Saturday as Kalamunda clash with Gosnells.

Michael Davies from Kalamunda was a runaway winner of the C Black Best & Fairest ahead of Gosnells Nathan Hansen, the two set to take the field in opposing colours this Sunday when the reigning Sunday Football League premiers attempt to win their first ever WAAFL flag.

It should be a vocal Kalamunda crowd that Gosnells encounter with the Kalamunda Cougars playing host to another ex-Sunday League Team in Thornlie at 12:20pm in the reserves and starting the day with a main event preview as they face Gosnells in the Ian Dargie Colts at 10:15pm.

Another ex-Sunday Football League team will take centre stage on the biggest day with Maddington having both their C Gold and C Gold Reserves sides vying for premiership glory at Forster Park.

The League encounter could very well be played at Subiaco Oval as Kingsway look to atone for their only losses of the season at the hands of Maddington in Round 16 and, more recently, a shock loss in the second semi-final.

The reserves at 12:20pm see’s Maddington again taking to the field, this time against High Wycombe with High Wycombe also looking for glory in the Laurie Keene Colts, taking on Ocean Ridge at 10:15am before the league clash at 2:30pm.

Gilbert Fraser Reserve will host the D Black Reserve clash between Kelmscott and Quinns at 2:30pm, the two finishing first and second during the home and away season. The reserves match at 12:20pm should be equally tough with Scarborough and Carlisle locking horns following on from Carlisle’s attack on the West Coast Eagles Colts premiership, facing Coolbellup at 10:15am.

Manning and Ellenbrook will battle it out for the D Gold flag at 2:30pm following impressive seasons from both clubs and strong finals performances to date.

Manning will also be involved in the curtain raiser reserves as they face Dianella Morley, both sides finishing the season with only percentage separating them on 56 points.

Wesley Curtin may not be in A Grade premiership contention but their E Grade side take on North Fremantle this Saturday at Ferndale Park at 2:30pm following University and Fremantle CBC’s reserves clash at 12:20pm.

The inaugural Brett Jones Colts Premiership will be fought out as the curtain raiser at 10:15am with Collegians and Trinity Aquinas doing battle for the honours.

G and F grade will be played at Thornlie Oval with Bullcreek Leeming and Collegians fighting it out for the F Grade flag at 2:30pm and Nollamara looking to get back to their winning ways as they take on Bassendean at 12:30pm.

In a first for the WAAFL, the H Grade will be a night time final played at 5:00pm following on from the day of A Grade action at Fremantle Oval. North Fremantle and Rossmoyne will be the two teams to contest this historic flag, North Fremantle starting slight favourites after finishing the home and away season just ahead on percentage.
