Curtin Uni Wesley win their first Women’s A Grade Flag

Curtin Uni Wesley have won their first Women’s A Grade flag defeating reigning premiers University by six points at Kingsley Oval on Saturday.

Curtin Uni Wesley and University had been the dominate teams all season in the Perth Football League Women’s A Grade competition finishing first and second on the ladder.

Both sides were off to a fast start with University’s Jaime Rust kicking the first goal of the match less than two minutes in before Curtin Uni Wesley’s Liusaidh Gilchrist levelled the score just a minute later.

It was a hotly contested match throughout with Curtin Uni Wesley adding no score in the second quarter leaving the margin just one point in favour of University at the main break.

The last six minutes of the third quarter saw goals to Jennifer Goertze (University), Liusaidh Gilchrist and Ruby Tompkins (Curtin Uni Wesley) to set up a close and competitive final term.

With University down by one goal the ball continued to stay in their forward fifty with just a minute remaining. University eventually running out of time with the final siren bringing relief for the Curtin Uni Wesley players as they secured their first Women’s A Grade flag.

Curtin Uni Wesley coach Martin Edmunds said, “The introduction of the women’s team to the club in 2017 completely changed the fabric of the football club and has already left such a significant and positive impact on everyone”.

“The women’s team is full of outstanding individuals and fabulous people to have around the club, the premiership is a just reward for everyone putting in so much time and effort over a number of years both on and off the field” said Edmunds.

Madeleine Goodman ran hard in the midfield all day for Curtin Uni Wesley earning best on ground honours for her efforts.

Earlier in the day Nollamara and Warnbro Swans went head to head in the B Grade Grand Final. Nollamara led all match defeating Warnbro Swans 5.9 (39) to 3.1 (19) handing Warnbro Swans their first loss for 2019.

The C Grade Grand Final saw Piara Waters defeat Coolbellup 5.7 (37) to 2.5 (17) to cap off a terrific first season in the competition to take out the inaugural Women’s C Grade flag.
