Community Football is kicking off

MORE than 13,000 senior football players are preparing for the Community Football WA season to kick off with an official launch at Subiaco Oval tomorrow evening (Wednesday, April 1).
Rationalisation of the competitions has resulted in three major metropolitan leagues operating in 2009. The Western Australian Amateur Football League will comprise of 57 clubs with 215 teams and over 10,000 registered players; the Mercantile Football Association will have 13 clubs, 16 teams and over 1200 registered players; and the West Australian Women’s Football League will have eight clubs, 12 teams and over 650 registered players.
The Sunday League, which was disbanded at the end of last year, has seen players absorbed into other competitions, with Armadale Football Club joining the Peel Football League and other clubs entering the WA Amateurs to continue playing community football. Clubs from the West Australian Football Association have also joined the WA Amateurs this season.
The official season launch on Wednesday will be hosted by Phil Lamb from ABC television and attended by West Australian Football Commission executives and commissioners, Community Football Council chairman Brian Sierakowski, Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation Ken Travers MLC, Fosters WA General Manager Dean Turner, and from the West Coast Eagles, guest speaker Neale Daniher and Chief Executive Officer Trevor Nisbett.
Community Football Chief Executive Officer Brendan Cullinan said he was looking forward to the official launch on Wednesday and the season kicking off on April 18.
“We are excited about a big season of community football ahead,” Mr Cullinan said.
“The rationalisation of the competitions has resulted in no loss of clubs which is a credit to the volunteers involved on league and club boards. Registration figures at most clubs are considerably up on this time last year which reflects the accessibility and quality of football experience at this level.”
The competitions commence on Saturday, April 18 for the WA Amateurs, with the Mercantile Association and Women’s League commencing on Sunday, April 19.
