A Grade Grand Final
16 Sep, 2009
THE stage is set for a historic match this weekend as North Beach look to take out their sixth A Grade flag in a row when they tackle North Fremantle this Saturday, the 19th of September, at Medibank Stadium.
Having won eight out of the past ten A Grade premierships, including the past five in a row, North Beach will look to further cement their name in the history books and become the first club to reach the historical figure of six in a row. Standing in their way is a determined North Fremantle side keen for revenge after losing the 2008 Grand Final to North Beach.
The day of football will start off with the Phil Scott Colts at 10:15am when University meet Collegians, the latter looking to go back to back after taking out the Drew Banfield Colts in 2008.
The sides finished on equal points at the end of the home and away season but University will start slight favourites after defeating a disappointing Collegians side in the second semi-final at Gil Fraser Reserve early in the finals series.
In the reserves it will be minor premiers Trinity Aquinas looking to continue impressive form which saw them finish the home and away season two games ahead of the next club, North Beach. To do so they’ll have to get past Whitford, the team that handed North Beach a shock four point loss in last weekends’ preliminary finals to keep their premiership dream alive.
Kick off for the reserves Grand Final is at 12:10pm, with the A Grade Grand Final following at 2:30pm.
The A Grade Grand Final see’s the 2008 Grand Finalists again locking horns in a David versus Goliath battle.
North Fremantle will be looking to recapture the type of form which saw them take the 2003 A Grade Premiership to Gil Fraser Reserve and head into the match in good form following an impressive performance against Whitford in the preliminary final last weekend.
Coached by 1984 Norm Smith Medalist Bill Duckworth, North Beach head into the match slight favourites after finishing one game ahead of North Fremantle on the ladder and having beating them in both encounters earlier this season.
